Iraq War Success: The Children, part III

During Saddam Hussein: Estimates of child mortality rates hovered at 125 deaths per 1,000 births for children under the age of five - diarrhea and acute respiratory infections accounted for 70 percent of the deaths

Now: Ministry of Health and Environment: indicate that the last year has witnessed an important drop in rates of disease among children under five, particularly for cholera and diarrhea

Now: Current child mortality estimates at 50 deaths per 1,000 births

Now: The US has assisted in training over 2,000 health educators, teachers, religious leaders and youth on hygiene, diarrhea, breast feeding, and immunization issues

hmmm....

Just by the by - the vast majority of those pre-invasion deaths were as a result of UN sanctions so I'm not sure there's any moral high ground to be found there.

Also I think the infant mortality due to being blown to pieces has gone up quite markedly since the invasion.

For each black view there is a white. I'm more comfortable with the balance provided by shades of grey.

I'm not drinking this kool-aid. Clinically speaking, you are correct Will, more good than bad has come out of this war. If one removes the cause and reasons we got into this hornet's nest in the first place, even the most jaded and well-read persons have to conclude this. But if health stats are a good reason to get into a war, then we could have certainly picked up easier targets in Africa. I hope this turns out well, I really do. I love my country, served it for 4 years in the NAVY and would grab a rifle to protect it if need be. But we HAVE to stop being the worlds Mommy for every freakin' thing. I say we re-vamp the Monroe Doctrine, declare the western hemisphere a radical religion free-zone and just develop a bastion of free enterprise from Nome to Antartica... to hell with Europe and the Middle East. Those bone-heads are so used to having the "Yanks" bail the sorry asses out for so long that they have emasculated themselves of the notion of self preservation and auto-reliance. Screw them! Let the Euros finally grow a pair and take care of their own back yard. Bring the boys home(ok, after a REASONABLE period.. whatever it may be). I'm not a cut and run guy Will, I love a good fight and am more belicose and hawkish than most of my Libertarian blood can take, but no matter how many stats you drop on my lap as to the improvement of Iraq's social condition, at the end of the day you have to ask yourself, who ever decided that Democracy and Islam can co-exist? THAT is the bottom tennant of any arguing for or against the war. My answer? NO! These monkeys have been pissing on each other for 2,000 are still wearing pajamas for clothes, give away clitorectomy's like food stamps in the Bronx and still believe they are going to bang 72 virgins when they die... PLEASE! let's make the best of a bad move, leave a decent government in place and fart on our way out.

Well said as always. Certainly, this isn't the only reason. But, it is one of those stories that would likely sway public opinion a bit in favor of the action - that's why we haven't heard it.

Isn't it great though? We, that are right-of-center, can disagree on many topics. We do so while many on the left continue to gravitate toward any opinion that will destroy the opposition. Those opinions are based on political gain - our are based upon values.

yes... I recently heard in some news tidbit that there was research or polling done on who was a happier camper, liberals or conservatives. It was no contest. I think we right-of-center brethren feel that our points have merit without resorting to vitriolic bomb throwing. I mean, even the usual suspects, blow-hards like Limbaugh, Beck and O'reilly have a pretty decent sense of humor. Neil Bortz is HILLARIOUS! They don't really harken to hateful rhetoric to espouse their views. The left on the other hand is quite the side-show. Its amazing that a political wing born on peace, love and happiness to all living things can be so pissed off and ALL living things. I see it in the Blogs. Most conservative blogs are pretty funny, insighful, somewhat sarcastic (ok, maybe just mine)and lastly show as much or more caring for the human condition than the boastful spews of the left's pie holes (ok stop that Dardin!!) The spirited discussions of ideas coupled with respect for other views is what conservative dogma is all about.

Intellectual growth is spurred by intellectual discourse. Humor spurs intellectual discourse.

"Vitrolic bomb-throwing" spurs contempt. Contempt stifles humor.

...and that ain't funny.
